Message from the President

UPDATE: Grande Prairie Curling Centre – November 28, 2020

Message From Your Board And Staff

For decades, our club, which operates as a not-for-profit organization, benefited from a robust provincial and city economy, enjoying full leagues, many bonspiels, and numerous corporate and elite team bookings.  This yielded many years of profitability, but the downturn in the oil patch in the last few years has impacted the financial performance at the club through fewer corporate bookings and bonspiels. We have been committed to our members to not increase fee levels for the past several years and have not offset the losses we have felt.

This has been greatly exacerbated this past year by the reality of COVID-19 closures and restrictions plus a delay to our opening awaiting the installment of an excellent new ice plant. Our Centre is privileged to have the full ongoing support of the City of Grande Prairie in upgrading our facility and providing us with one of the best and leading-edge curling centres in the Province.

With the most recent guidelines from the Province, it has been determined by AHS that we can open our Centre from now to December 18 to individuals and families living in the same household for pre-booked practice ice, plus food and beverage services. Our lounge will be open offering beverages, along with excellent food, prepared by our first-rate Executive Chef, ranging from appetizers to meals. If there are further restrictions, we will continue to offer practice ice, if allowable, for the balance of December.

We are hopeful that we will have our regular leagues fully operational by the first week in January and have extended the season through to the week of April 23, which will provide our members with a 16 week curling season, which we believe will be accepted very positively by our members

We will be opening the Centre on Wednesday, December 2 for individuals and families to practice. The Board has decided to extend the Member’s free practice ice benefit to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to enjoy some curling with their family.

It will be a completely COVID-19 compliant outing following all protocol and rules to ensure the safety of you and your family.

The schedule for this week is:

  • Wednesday, December 2
    • 5 pm – 9 pm
  • Thursday, December 3
    • 5 pm – 9 pm
  • Friday, December 4
    • 5 pm – 9 pm
  • Saturday, December 5
    • 12 pm – 3 pm
    • 5 pm – 9 pm
  • Sunday, December 6
    • 12 pm – 3 pm

Please pre-book and reserve your ice time by emailing or calling 780-518-0367. Time slots will be booked on a first come, first served basis. Watch for further schedules.

We are determined to keep the Grande Prairie Curling Centre operational and viable for the future. There are several ways that you can help support your Centre.

  1. Patronize Your Club – When you come to practice or play, head to the lounge before or afterwards to eat and drink. We employ people to provide these services and if the lounge sits empty, we all lose. If you cannot stay, consider takeout.
  2. Volunteer – The offer of your time helps us offset costs and gives you a unique opportunity to see some of our inner workings. Volunteers help with junior programs, leagues, bonspiels, special events and fund raising, ice installations and maintenance etc.
  3. Sponsorship – Our membership covers a broad base of community business and endeavours. If you own, work for, or patronize a local business, consider advertising partnerships.
  4. Donate – We will gratefully accept cash donations of any amount. If you are able to do so, consider donating refunds to your centre.
  5. Rentals – Once current COVID restrictions are lifted, consider renting our ice, lounge and meeting rooms for business, special occasion, and family events. We will be emphasizing year- round rentals of our facilities.
  6. Promote Your Centre – Together we can all help to provide positive endorsements in the community which will boost our Centre’s image and bottom line.

Our board and staff would be very appreciative of any suggestions that you may have to further enhance the Grande Prairie Curling Centre. We thank you for your continued support of our centre and the sport of curling.
